DUTCH GIRL

Things are not going at all well in the motor vehical department at my house.

New Year's Eve some drunken 21 year old asshole ran a red light and smashed into T's car. Luckily, he wasn't hurt (although his mandolin didn't survive the incident), but the car was a write-off. And because the car was older (1989), even though it was in great shape and we had put a couple thousand dollars worth of work in to it in the last two years, the insurance company has only agreed to give us $1000 for the vehicle. And there's no way we can buy another vehicle in decent shape for $1000, especially one T can tour in.

But we bit the bullet and decided to buy another vehicle anyway. We've been looking at used mini-vans in the $4000 - $5000 range, and T figured he had plenty of room on his credit card to pay for the whole thing. And we saw one we wanted, for $4500.

And then, on Saturday, he lost his wallet. Had to cancel the credit cards. Had to delay the buying of the van we'd picked out until the new cards come.

No big deal. He's going out of town tomorrow for 4 days. But he's flying so he doesn't need a car and I'd have mine for grocery shopping and stuff. Hopefully the van will still be there when he gets back and gets his new credit cards.

And then, this morning some asshole city worker decides to drive his city truck, pulling a trailer, down our hill. It's been snowing all night and the roads are slippery and the hill hasn't been sanded or ploughed and it's the second steepest hill in the city. It's pretty steep. And he decides to take his truck down it. The trailor jack-knifes and takes out the rear end of my car.

I love my car. It's kind of old, too. 1988. But it's a great car to drive and I love it. It should have lasted me a few more years, just driving it around the city, to and from work and the grocery store. And now it may have to be written off too. Unless they think the back end can be pounded out and repaired for less than $1000. I sure hope so, cause in addition to loving that car, we can't afford to buy two new (well, new to us) cars right now.

What's the matter with people? Who would think to drive his truck and trailer down a very steep, snowy, slippery, unploughed, unsanded hill?
