DUTCH GIRL

Downtown city life.

2004-08-27 - 10:57 a.m.

I parked my car at a farther away parkade this morning (it's about $10 cheaper) and walked the 4 blocks from there to work. I was walking down the Stephen Avenue Mall, which is a sort of out-door mall with mostly fancy restaurants and gift shops in old reconstructed buildings.

It's pretty on a day like today, with the sun shining brightly and that slight crispness of fall in the air.

There was this gal walking along in front of me, picking flowers from the restaurant patio flower boxes and cigarettes from the out-door ashtrays. She had that twitchy weirdness of a junky. When I passed by her, she was freaking out over trying to pick a silk rose from a fake flower arrangement.

In the next block, there were two drunk Natives (9:00am) having a yelling fight with each other. In the block after that there was a woman wearing too many layers of clothing and preaching loudly on the street corner.

It's sad that we can build these big, modern cities, with all the amenities, but we can't figure out how to look after the people in them.
